OPTIMA's Sustainability Strategy

We care for tomorrow

A third generation, family-run business with 100 years of success in the marketplace. Trading in a sustainable way is in our company's DNA.

By this, we mean corporate management that operates in the long term, in partnership, and acts to conserve precious resources, and in doing so, makes an important contribution to preserving our world for future generations. Our sustainability strategy "We care for tomorrow" ensures that this translates into concrete terms.

The company will establish reduction targets for 2030 and a net-zero target for 2050, aligning with the 1.5-degree goal of the Paris Agreement. These targets encompass all OPTIMA Group activities and consider both direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3). OPTIMA thus emphasizes its commitment to climate protection and contributes significantly to mitigating global climate change.

Certificado de sostenibilidad

CDP

The Carbon Disclosure Project is a non-profit organization founded in London in 2000, with the aim of ensuring that companies and municipalities publish their environmental data such as climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption. We also share our data to create transparency.

Certificado ISO14001

DIN 14001

DIN EN ISO 14001 is a standard for environmental management systems, one that is accepted and applied worldwide. Key requirements involve the planning, implementation, monitoring and improvement of environmental targets. In 2022, Optima introduced an environmental management system in compliance with DIN EN ISO 14001.

Certificado DIN 16247

DIN 16247

Carrying out an energy audit in accordance with DIN EN 16247, i.e. a systematic examination of organizations', plants', buildings' and systems' energy use and consumption, is an important foundation for improving energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption.

Thinking sustainably means taking holistic action

We do not just want to be producing, filling and packaging in a highly environmentally, climate-friendly way. We also want to be helping our customers to achieve their own sustainability targets. To put it in a nutshell, we want to set an example in the areas environment, social responsibility and corporate governance. It's an ambitious goal that requires both a comprehensive and a structured approach. To do it, we have defined three lines of action.

Circular Packaging

Sustainable packaging solutions that make a circular economy possible. The vision involves continually reusing materials to prevent loss.

Sustainable Technology

Machines and systems that operate at maximum efficiency and save resources, and do so throughout the entire product life cycle.

Corporate Sustainability

Manage ecologically, fairly, and focused on the long term, and thus drastically reduce the consumption of resources and emissions associated with value creation.

Corporate Sustainability

Sustainable packaging and technologies are key pillars of our "We care for tomorrow" sustainability strategy. This is underpinned by the "Corporate Sustainability" area - the the entire company's consistently sustainable direction, based on three principles social, economic and ecological.

In this, we take our lead from the UN Global Compact, the world's largest and most important initiative in the area of sustainable, responsible corporate governance. We are setting clear targets: we want to:

  • make a contribution to the quality of life
  • reduce consumption of resources
  • reduce our ecological footprint
  • motivate our partners too to move towards sustainability

Sustainable Technology

Máquina para el envasado en porciones de cápsulas de café - proceso de punzonado y sellado

Optima machines have always been about sustainability, for example in terms of the machines' service life, process accuracy, and utilization of packaging materials, to name just a few factors. Today, we are going further still.

Every detail counts

At Optima, we get right down to the nitty-gritty. We deal with issues like - What future-proof carbon -optimized materials can we use for our machines? Which partners can we source them from and what technology is used to manufacture them? What does recyclable machine design entail, and where are the opportunities to make use of recyclates? We thoroughly examine every single aspect of mechanical and system engineering, identify potential savings and implement, them. That's what sustainable technology is for us.

Saving energy

We have reduced energy consumption by 38 percent and heating time by 95 percent by adopting the latest sealing technology. Energy reduction is one of the key aspects of our new machine designs.

Compact design means we can double output per square meter of production area. At the same time, production areas can become considerably smaller. An example of this is the OTIMA EGS. The footprint of this machine has been reduced by over 40 percent.

Icono Máxima disponibilidad
Highest levels of availability

Smart services maximize our machines' availability and reveal any production vulnerabilities. This reduces needless downtime, which makes production more sustainable.

Process accuracy

Our high-precision "topping-up" dosing process reduces underfilling and overfilling of packages to an absolute minimum, thereby achieving an increase in output of 500,000 doses per year.

Maximizing life cycles

Our digital services enable us to achieve maximum plant availability with optimized maintenance costs. It's what we call Reliability-Based Maintenance. This means among other things that the service life of wear and spare parts can be maximized. Rebuilding and overhaul programs mean that the equipment can be adapted to meet market needs, without having to be completely replaced.

Sustainable machine recycling

Correct recycling of machinery makes a major contribution to resource conservation. Therefore, as a manufacturer, we offer the option of ending the life cycle of the machine sustainably upon request and returning the individual parts to the material flows professionally – for the sake of the environment.

The optimal utilization of packaging materials is a key aspect of sustainability and TCO considerations. We increase the efficiency of material utilization by 39 percent by optimizing the configuration of die cutting modules.

Achieving climate targets. With OPTIMA Time for climate-friendly plants!

On request, we can determine the product carbon footprint (PCF) of your project, analyze it and reduce it using sustainable technologies. With a positive impact on your carbon footprint and the operating costs of the plant.

As regards the manufacturing phase, we examine all of the carbonemissions, from the mining of the raw materials to the machine that is ready to ship. The utilization phase begins when the machine is shipped and ends when it is recycled. During this phase, it also depends on the electric power mix used for manufacturing, the way in which the process media are produced, and the system's operating mode.

To ensure maximum transparency, the method of calculating the PCF of our machines has been audited by TÜV SÜD in accordance with ISO 14067.

Working together with you, we also analyze existing machines' carbon -footprint and assist you with a wide range of optimization measures.

Circular Packaging

From the concept to the store

Reusing packaging materials again and again without any loss of quality is what is known as the cradle-to-cradle principle. That is exactly what we are working to achieve. with the clear aim of optimally balancing product protection, environmental footprint and profitability.

We accompany you on the journey to a sustainable packaging, right from brainstorming to the finished product in stores. We assist you in producing samples, carrying out tests under near-production conditions, and in converting your production processes. Together with our network partners, if you wish, we can even help you set up new supply chains for the best materials.

There's no contradiction between
Packaging and sustainability

Frequently, packaging is often at the center of debates, but this is not always justified. Packaging is much more than just pretty wrappings. It effectively protects sensitive products from spoilage, and makes them durable, manageable and traceable. This is particularly important when it comes to food, because it makes an important contribution to feeding the world's growing population. Avoiding food waste also reduces the global climate footprint by eight percent. But only a small part of packaged food's carbonfootprint can be attributed to packaging, so it pays to look at it closely.

Packaging protects essential products from perishing
Avoiding food waste helps reduce carbon-dioxide
Only around 3.5 % of a product's carbon footprint is due to the packaging
