Nucleus for innovation

The OPTIMA Technology Campus Schwäbisch Hall

Innovation needs the right framework conditions. At the Schwäbisch Hall Technology Campus, we systematically devote ourselves to researching and developing innovative technologies and processes that are available throughout the Group. In doing so, we also make targeted use of all the fascinating possibilities offered by the latest digital technology - provided this results in a tangible benefit for our customers.

After all, the driving force behind this is always our desire to create measurable benefits for you: by continuously maximizing production reliability, efficiency and flexibility in your respective production and packaging processes. If the result then sets new standards, this is certainly not our most important goal. But a confirmation that we are serious about our principle: We care for innovations.

Two powerful development centers for digitization and additive manufacturing

Man operating virtual reality application in the Optima Digital Innovation Center
Digital Innovation Center

The Digital Innovation Center plays a central role within the Optima Packaging Group as a think tank and in the further development and presentation of digital solutions. In addition to digital technologies and applications related to augmented and virtual reality, smart services are also presented here. In the new showroom, customers and visitors can experience Optima's digitalization solutions live.

Additive Innovation Center

The Additive Innovation Center is the development center for 3D printing technology from Optima. With additive manufacturing technology, we ensure that our customers can work even faster and more flexibly. All common 3D printing processes are used here: New parts are created - and existing parts can be designed according to models in nature, for example, lighter, more stable and more material-efficient than before.

Flexibility redefined

Example plant "Project ZERO" for the packaging of Femcare products

With Optima Nonwovens' "Project ZERO" concept line, we showed for the first time in 2017 at the "Index" trade show what the future could bring in packaging solutions for hygiene products. A few years later, each of the innovative technologies was available in exactly the same way.

  • Format changeover within one cycle
  • Inline printing: change of packaging design possible within one cycle
  • User-oriented and customizable control panel (HMI)
  • Speed Rail System with linear drive technology
  • Linear pusher: travel profile can be optimized for each product and package
  • Adjustment of format width during operation: ±50 % of the width of the installed format part

Complexity mastered

Example plant for the tobacco and vaping industry with over 1,000 control points

When a product consists of eight different components, when these parts have to be combined, filled, sealed, and labeled, and when the entire process has to be meticulously monitored, then a superlative system is needed. Exactly the right challenge for the experts at Optima Consumer.
The result is a system consisting of around 55 modules in three large units. Units 1 and 2 are responsible for assembling subassemblies, while unit 3 combines them and fills them. A total of 300 workpiece carriers circulate between the units and more than ten exchangeable filling trolleys are used.

  • Over 80 m transport line length
  • More than 10 electronic switches for product flow separation
  • About 300 m2 floor space
  • 1,000 sensors inside the line
  • 5 ultrasonic welding systems
  • 10 laser welding systems
  • 3 marking lasers

Possibilities expanded

Turnkey project with filling line, isolator and freeze dryer for the pharmaceutical industry

A globally successful pharmaceutical company wanted to expand its portfolio to include the production of biologics and small molecules. Specifically, this involves the latest generation of cancer drugs for preclinical and clinical use. This requires a modern, flexible filling line with isolator and freeze dryer that meets the highest requirements.

Syringes, cartridges and vials can be filled on the MultiUse complete line. A 100 percent in-process weight control and corresponding technologies such as RoR (Redosing-on-Request) monitor the process and minimize product loss. The machine's SCADA control is integrated with the customer's systems and enables smooth communication with the production facility.

  • Filling of syringes and cartridges, freeze-drying of vials
  • Filling of containers with peristaltic pumps
  • All packaging materials are supplied nested and pre-sterilized
  • Removal of the protective foil by a Tyvek-Removal-Robot
  • Handling of a wide range of pharmaceuticals up to highly potent active ingredients
